Yvonne Joyce Craig

Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16, 1936 - August 17 in 2015), was an American dancer, dancer, and choreographer. Her most famous work is for her role in Batman's 1960s TV series Batman as well as Marta the Orion slave girl sporting green skin, from Star Trek's 1969 episode "Whom Gods Destruction". The Huffington Post called her "a pioneer in female superheroes" on television. Yvonne Craig was born and raised in Taylorville, Illinois. In 1951, her family moved to the Oak Cliff neighborhood in Dallas, Texas, where she was a student at W. H. Adamson High School and later Sunset High School, from which she was not able to graduate due to the lack of "a single PE credit". After being discovered by Alexandra Danilova, a ballerina and teacher, Craig joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo as its youngest corps de ballet member. This training was helpful when she was performing stunts acting as Batgirl. In 1957, she quit the ballet company due to an issue over casting changes. Then, she moved to Los Angeles with the hope to continue her career in dance. However, she discovered herself appearing in film roles. One of her first television appearances was on the TV series Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover") in 1958 alongside Neil Hamilton. Hamilton later played the role of Batgirl's stepfather Commissioner James Gordon. Shortly afterwards, she appeared in three films - The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story and Gidget (all 1959)--and was also a guest in the TV series Mr. Lucky as Beverly Mills in the episode "Little Miss Wow" (also 1959). Craig was a part of Bing Crosby in High Time (1960) and in Seven Women from Hell (1961) as a guest with Cesar Romero. In 1962, she appeared as an actor in the Western Laramie episode "The Long Road Back". Craig also starred with Elvis Presley in the roles of was at the World's Fair (1963), and Kissin Cousins (64). She also appeared in the science-fiction film Mars Needs Women (1966) and appeared in In Like Flint (1967) as an in-character Russian ballet dancer opposite James Coburn.
