Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theatre in daylight. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to communicate through artwork. Even though DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma and decided to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was still in college. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage of one of members of the jury. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
